HONEY |

Honey is the syrup made by bees from flower nectar. The darker the honey, the stronger the flavor. There are thousands of different flavors of honey, derived from different types of flowers, not the bees themselves. (HFHA Coll.)
Humans have been tracking down and stealing honey from wild hives for thousands of years. (HFHA Coll.)
In Africa an unusual relationship developed between a wax eating bird and people. The Greater Honeyguide (see photo by Nigel Dennis, published in Birds of the World by Colin Harrison) gets humans and some animals to follow it to a hive and open it. The bird then feeds on the wax and young bees. (HFHA Coll.)
Human beings eventually began the process of beekeeping by transferring a colony of bees to wooden hives. These are specially constructed to make access to the honey combs easier. (HFHA Coll.)
Thousands of different devices and containers for serving honey have been designed and marketed. This ceramic honey pot has a spout for easy pouring. (HFHA Coll.)
