Welcome
to one part of the exhibit on fruits. (The other features fruits from
shrubs and vines.) All fruits develop from flowers and contain seeds,
insuring that new plants will grow from the old.
Here you'll find exhibits on fruits that grow on trees. Fruit trees
are perennial plants, growing several years after they are planted.
They include apples, citrus, peaches, figs, mangoes and many others.
Apples are known as pomes, botanically. This means they are fruits with
a papery core that encloses the seeds. Citrus are considered to be berries,
single enlarged ovaries with many seeds. Peaches and mangoes are known
as drupes, fruits with hard pits that surround the seed. Figs are multiple
fruits, developing from one cluster of flowers.
