1903 Quaker Oats promotion
Wild oats originated somewhere around northern Germany. 
They popped up as pesky weeds in planted fields of wheat and barley. 
Eventually farmers growing grains at higher elevations gave up,
realizing that the oats did better than the other grains. 
By 1000 BC people were sowing oats in Germany, 
Denmark and Switzerland. By the 4th century AD 
a Germanic people called Vandals were introducing 
oats throughout the rest of Europe.
Animals still eat most of the world’s oats—90 percent of the U.S. crop goes to livestock—though many people love steaming bowls of mush or oatmeal, oat cakes, and oat bread. Oats are the only whole grain that North Americans eat with any regularity.
