Puchinella

Italy's Comedia del Arte star, the popular buffoon character, Punchinella, eating stands of pasta hanging from his hand held over his upturned face was a powerful model for the way to eat.  But pasta required the seller to provide a bowl and utensils, which in turn, needed washing and water was in chronic short supply.

Enter pizza, the perfect solution for both vendor and customer.  Soon Punchinella was seen eating folded over slices of pizza.
