"Notgeld"

After World War I, high inflation caused German money to be almost worthless. Germans needed a wheelbarrow full of money to buy their groceries. So local communities printed their own notes which could be exchanged for potatoes and other staples. This piece of "notgeld" could be redeemed for 25 kilos of potatoes.
