What
Educators and Parents
Say About Our Programs
|

Carol Merrill
school librarian
|
"I was really happy to see the response of the children to
the vitality of the presentations. After each program, they were
eager to touch things and ask questions. Our teachers were very
pleased that Tom supplies lots of preview and follow-up materials
that applied to their classroom studies. So the children are learning
while they are having a terrific time. These are good programs.
The Food Museum is a real
presence on the Internet, and their "Ask the Food Museum"
feature is a unique tool for students and teachers to consult
an expert they have actually met."

"
These programs weave together: show and tell, games, math puzzlers,
role-playing, music and humor. All the programs provide hands-on,
enriching, exciting cross-curriculum learning experiences about
important subjects. They are accessible and enjoyable.
Tom is able to develop and deliver programs
that appeal to all age levels. Parents and teachers are frequently
as engaged as the students. The programs are wonderful. I feel
blessed that my students and I have been enriched. "

"These
programs are great, for one reason: kids are still making references
to these programs a year later.
Things they've picked up in the program are still with them!"

"The
Food Museum programs really extended my students' learning in
a way that I couldn't provide on my own. One of the things I really
like is Tom Hughes' enthusiasm for his topic. He really gets the
kids excited about anything he does with them. I like the fact
that the presentations are very hands-on. For instance, he had
the kids role play crssing the ocean in a prop boat to emphazise
the point that food, as well as people traveled to new lands.
The programs are very kinesthetic and
very dramatic. I especially remember when Tom was doing a health
segment, his demonstration graphically showed how fats clog the
arteries. I don't think I'll ever forget it and I don't think
the students will either.!
These programs, by the way, are a perfect
use for PTA enrichment funds. "

"I
would never have thought of studying the world through food. Maybe
reaching kids in science, social social studies and math is through
their stomachs!
This was an energetic, exciting presentation,
that reached even the youngest students.
I like the way music, song and group recitations
were included. The kids got to ring authentic Swiss cow bells
in one program and experiment with an Indonesian angklung in another.

"
It's real, it's hands-on. It's not some abstract thing that kids
never experience...everybody eats!
Students were enthusiastic and Tom uses
good teaching methods. I like the idea that through food, a basic
need,he introduces the world. " |

Marcia de Chadenedes
curriculum specialist
|
"I think
these are great programs for kids because they relate to something
that is very important to them. Food makes their day, all day. They
look forward to lunch,. They look forward to dinner. They have breakfast,
first thing. And they make big decisions all day.
So this connects with what students see as important and puts an
historical spin on it. " |

Mary Nutt
principal
|
"Really interesting program!
It's important to know where food comes from and how it got here." |

Rodney Mayfield
science teacher
|
"I got caught up in the program, as
much as the students! I learned too. " |
