Whale is a collective term for a group
of marine mammals that have been widely used by humans for food, fuel,
etc. By the mid 20th century, advances in whale hunting technology caused
depletion of stocks and curbs on whaling. The end of a whale hunt by
Northwest Native Americans in the 19th century is depicted by Roger
Vernam. It was published in Watlala---An Indian Boy of the Northwest
in 1935. (Hughes Food History Archives)
